To relieve stress and reach deep relaxation, we need the right music or playlist. Every activity requires a different kind of music to enhance focus, productivity, or mindfulness. When it comes to work, study, or meditation, the right choice is a beautiful melody that stimulates both the soul and the mind. The power of instrumental music, free from lyrics, allows us to concentrate without distraction, creating an atmosphere of peace and tranquility
.
For me, instrumental music is a must. It helps clear my thoughts, keeps me grounded, and provides a soothing backdrop for moments of deep focus or self-reflection. Among the many genres of instrumental music, I find traditional Japanese music particularly enchanting. The delicate sounds of the koto, the rhythmic strumming of the shamisen, and the ethereal tones of the Japanese flute transport me to a serene, almost meditative state.
I first learned about these instruments when I read the book Portrait of Shunkin by Tanizaki Junichiro—a beautifully written story about a young woman named Shunkin, a blind musician and master of both the koto and the shamisen. This novel not only introduced me to the world of traditional Japanese music but also deepened my appreciation for its emotional depth and artistic precision. The way Tanizaki describes the melodies, the discipline of the musicians, and the cultural significance of these instruments made me feel as if I were listening to the music itself while reading.
Traditional Japanese music is often associated with Zen practices and mindfulness. It is used in tea ceremonies, spiritual rituals, and meditation sessions to create a calming ambiance. The harmonious blend of nature-inspired sounds and carefully composed melodies fosters an environment where one can escape from the chaos of everyday life and immerse in pure tranquility.
If you are looking for music to help you focus, relax, or simply unwind after a long day, I highly recommend exploring traditional Japanese instrumental music. It might just become your go-to soundtrack for moments of peace and deep relaxation.
They may come a little stronger for focusing on studying and mental work, but these sounds are perfect if you practice meditation or yoga.
Here is a 1-hour koto music that I love. Enjoy.
